With increasing visibility, Design and Technology (D&T) projects will help children understand the world around us and drive higher order thinking skills across Hallam Primary School via memorable learning. D&T will allow children to consider the views of others and evaluate their ideas and products against their own design criteria to improve their work, be creative in developing functional, appealing products that are aimed at particular individuals or groups and are fit for purpose, and be analytical in identifying the features, problems and solutions in products. In a fun, enjoyable and engaging environment, D&T will challenge children to research information and think for themselves, give reasoned answers, work independently, be enterprising, and develop good resilience and attitudes to learning.
The D&T Pathway
Providing high quality teaching and materials, D&T learning will arch across the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, though the Key Stage 1 (KS1) and Key Stage 2 (KS2) National Curriculum and prepare children for the journey beyond. In doing so, D&T will embrace the key aims of the creative curriculum, taught throughout Hallam Primary School, and the goals of the core (English, Maths and Science) and wider curriculum subjects (such as Computing, PE and Art).
In EYFS, children will enhance their ‘Expressive Arts and Design’ skills, developing their curiosity and interest in design, exploration of construction and assembly of objects, the safe and secure use of tools, and their confidence and enjoyment in expressing ideas through their making activities. In KS1, children will engage in a variety of creative and practical activities, and be taught the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in an iterative process of designing and making. Through KS2, children will become proficient at creatively incorporating the 3 key elements of D&T into each project; Investigate and Evaluate Activities (IEAs), Focused Tasks (FTs), and Design, Make and Evaluate Assignment (DMEA).
Forging links with local food and nutrition, marketing, design and engineering experts, D&T will bring the outside world into the children’s classrooms and create memorable learning experiences.
